Wodonga Rural City, now known simply as Wodonga, is located in the northeast region of Victoria, Australia. This vibrant community has a rich history, beginning with the indigenous tribes who lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of European settlers. The Gunditjmara people were the predominant tribe in the region. They were semi-nomadic hunters and gatherers who lived off the land's natural resources, including the Murray River. During the 1860s, gold was discovered in nearby Beechworth, leading to a gold rush that brought thousands of people to the region. Wodonga became a bustling town, with hotels, shops, and services catering to the needs of gold prospectors. However, the gold rush was short-lived, and by the end of the decade, the population had dwindled again. The 20th century saw significant growth and development in Wodonga. In the 1940s, the town became a significant military hub, with the establishment of the Bandiana Army Base. The base provided employment opportunities for locals and brought new residents to the region. The 1960s and 1970s saw further expansion, with the construction of new housing developments, industrial areas, and commercial centers. In 1973, Wodonga was officially declared a city, and since then, it has continued to grow and thrive. Today, it is a vibrant regional center, with a population of around 40,000 people. The city's economy is diverse, with industries including manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The city is also home to La Trobe University's Albury-Wodonga campus and the Wodonga Institute of TAFE. Wodonga's charm lies not only in its history but also in its natural beauty.
